Byron Bay time zone: why your tour may start an hour early

Byron is in NSW, a short drive from Queensland, and for half the year the two states keep different clocks. Several Byron operators warn about it on their listings.

The short answer

The rule

The NSW Government says daylight saving in NSW starts at 2 am on the first Sunday in October, when clocks go forward to 3 am, and ends on the first Sunday in April. In 2026 it started on Sunday 4 October. Queensland does not use daylight saving.

So from October to April, Byron Bay is one hour ahead of the Gold Coast and Brisbane. From April to October, the two states show the same time.

A bill to shorten daylight saving in NSW is before the state parliament. If it passes, the dates could change; check the NSW Government page before you travel.

Which tour listings warn you

Several Byron operators flag this on their listings:

  • Turtle School (whale watching and Julian Rocks snorkelling) says it is one hour ahead of Queensland during daylight saving, and that arriving more than 20 minutes late for a whale trip, or 30 minutes for a snorkel, forfeits the ticket.
  • Go Sea Kayak notes that NSW is on a different time from Queensland in the summer months.
  • Byron Bay Adventure Tours gives its hinterland pickup as 8:45 am, “NSW, not QLD time”.
  • Out Of The Blue asks guests travelling from Queensland to check the NSW time difference.

Whale watching from The Pass

The time on your ticket is NSW time; arriving more than 20 minutes late forfeits it.

The sea kayak tour on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) and the hinterland day on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) also quote NSW times.

Cross-border pickups

Tours that collect you in Queensland are where the two clocks meet. Skydive Australia’s Gold Coast pickup, at the Mantra on View in Surfers Paradise, is listed as “8:00 AM (7:00AM AEDT)”. That cannot be right: AEDT is NSW summer time, which is ahead of Queensland, so 8 am on the Gold Coast is 9 am in Byron. Confirm the pickup time directly with the operator.

Other tours starting in Queensland, such as the Gold Coast private day and the Brisbane day trip, are timed from their pickup point. Gold Coast day trips and Brisbane day trips cover them.

How to avoid getting it wrong

  • Read the time on a Byron tour as NSW time unless the listing says otherwise.
  • If you are staying on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane between October and April, subtract an hour to get your Queensland departure time, then add the drive.
  • For a Queensland pickup, ask which clock the time is in.
  • Set a calendar alarm with the time zone stated, not just the hour.

Questions people ask

Is Byron Bay on the same time as the Gold Coast?

From April to October, yes. From October to April, Byron is an hour ahead.

Does Byron Bay have daylight saving?

Yes. NSW uses daylight saving from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April.

Which airport should I fly into?

See getting to Byron Bay; Gold Coast Airport is on the Queensland clock.

Two more things people ask

When does daylight saving end?

Under the current NSW rule, at 3 am on the first Sunday in April, when clocks go back an hour. The bill before parliament could change that, so check the NSW Government page if you are travelling around then.

Does any of this matter if I am staying in Byron?

No. If you are staying in NSW, the times on Byron listings are your local time. It only matters when you are coming from, or being picked up in, Queensland.

Before you book: the time-zone checklist

  • Is your travel date between October and April?
  • Is the listed time NSW time?
  • For a Queensland pickup, have you confirmed the clock?
  • Have you added drive time and the check-in buffer?
